Perception and Production of Staccato Articulation on the Piano

چکیده

Skilled pianists were requested to interactively adjust note (i.e., key depression) durations in simple sequences, played under computer control on a digital piano, so as to sound optimally staccato (perception task) and to perform analogous sequences with staccato articulation on the same instrument as well as on a real piano (production task). The independent variables were tempo, register, and pitch step size; also, in production, hand and sequential position. Note durations increased significantly as tempo decreased in both perception and production, but there were large individual differences in the magnitude of these effects. Note durations were longer in production than in perception, and longer on the digital than on the real piano. In perception but not in production, low notes were assigned shorter durations than high notes. There were complex effects of sequential note position, in part due to metrical structure. The results illustrate some of the factors that influence staccato articulation, and they also reveal some discrepancies between perception and production of staccato. In particular, it seems that produced staccato is not necessarily perceptually staccato. Repp: Staccato articulation Page 3

Production and perception of legato, portato, and staccato articulation in saxophone playing

This paper investigates the production and perception of different articulation techniques on the saxophone. In a production experiment, two melodies were recorded that required different effectors to play the tones (tongue-only actions, finger-only actions, combined tongue and finger actions) at three different tempi. A sensor saxophone reed was developed to monitor tongue-reed interactions du...

Importance of Note-Level Control in Automatic Music Performance

A summary is presented of recent studies on articulation in piano music performance together with the applications they originated. Emphasis is given to legato and staccato articulation. Results from measurements of performances recorded with MIDIfied grand pianos are summarized. Some rules for the simulation of articulation are presented and their application in renderings of emotional express...

Articulation Rules For Automatic Music Performance

Rules for legato, staccato, and repeated notes articulation in automatic piano performance are presented. These rules were obtained applying the analysis-by-measurement method to performances of Mozart piano sonatas on MIDIfied acoustic grand pianos. The effects produced by the rules vary with tempo indications, with expressive intentions and with musical context. The articulation rules are par...

Effects of articulation styles on perception of modulated tempos in violin excerpts

We investigated effects of legato, staccato and pizzicato articulation styles on the perception of modulated tempos. Seventy-two music majors served as participants. Two solo violin excerpts were chosen with contrasting rhythmic rates and were recorded in all three articulation styles. Examples were presented to listeners in three conditions of tempo modulation: gradual increase, gradual decrea...
